Richard Hunwick's first ten years after graduation were with Dorr-Oliver, an engineering and capital equipment supply company serving industries based on extraction of resources, and beneficiation and value-adding to commodities including coal, petroleum, alumina, base metals, iron and steel, paper, corn, sugar and other food commodities, also control of pollution from these industries.
After acquiring his MBA, as a management consultant he completed assignments in Australia, New Zealand and Mexico (became proficient in Spanish), focusing on strategy formulation. He
Identified an opportunity, and subsequently led, efforts to develop independent power generation based upon wastes from the export coal industry, work which has led to the Redbank Project, a 140 MWe power plant commissioned in 2001 in the Hunter Valley, NSW. Over the last 25 years he has developed and acquired particular expertise in treating coal washery tailings.
In completing more than 70 reports over the last 19 years as an independent energy consultant, he has advised inter alia: the (now) NSW Department of Energy, Utilities and Sustainability; CSIRO, Macquarie Bank, Macquarie Generation, and EnergyAustralia. Also, he has prepared feasibility study and due diligence assignments for power projects; carried out diversification, market entry, and strategy and policy formulation studies for greenhouse gas emission control.
